Thenga Chammanthi/ Coconut Chutney

This is an irresistible chutney with coconut served with rice. It is a personal favorite among all the chutneys of each Keralites. For the sourness, here tamarind is added, alternative to this, we can add raw mango.


  • Coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Red chilly – 5
  • Shallots – 4
  • Ginger – small piece
  • Tamarind – small piece
  • Curry leaf – 1 sprig
  • Salt


  1. Heat oil in a pan, add shallots, ginger, curry leaves and dried red chilly.
  2. Fry for 2-3 minutes, till you get the roasted smell. Add coconut and mix well. Just fry it for a minute.  Remove from fire and let it cool.
  3. Add tamarind and salt to this mix. Ground it in the mixer without adding water. Serve it with rice or kanji.
